$38,000 gold? I watched a video earlier this week making the case for it. That kind of heading obviously gets the clicks. Still, I was curious and wanted to learn more, as I generally like Andrei Jikh's YouTube posts on finance and macroeconomics.
He made an interesting observation.
For the first time, China's single largest ETF is a gold fund. The Huaan Yifu Gold ETF (ticker 518880) — one of the funds ordinary Chinese savers pour money into — has overtaken the country's flagship CSI 300 stock-index fund, at roughly $13bn to $12bn.
Sit with that for a moment. In the world's second-biggest economy, the single largest pool of ETF money now sits in gold rather than in equities.
And it isn't only households. The biggest institutional buyers kept accumulating gold straight through a brutal drawdown — the kind of fall that usually flushes out the weak holders. China's central bank has reportedly been adding month after month, for well over a year, while the price kept going down.
When a buyer keeps accumulating as the price falls, they've stopped treating the metal as a trade. They're not timing an entry or booking a gain. They're moving savings into something they intend to hold regardless of where it prints next quarter.
That feels like a different category of demand, and it doesn't behave like the speculative flows most people model. It doesn't sell into strength. It doesn't panic into weakness. It just keeps showing up.
For anyone who finances or builds the assets under that metal, it's worth sitting with. Price-insensitive demand, from households and central banks at the same time, isn't a headline event. It's a slow re-rating.
Whether gold ever sees $38,000 is a debate for the ages. Whether the world's largest holders, top to bottom, have quietly changed how they think about it has, I'd argue, already been answered.
Worth watching who else stops caring about the price.
